Capri - Campania
|
| This is the most extolled of all the Parthenopean islands and the most loved by the
elegant and cosmopolitian public. Capri
lies about 17 miles from Naples and is less than 3.5 miles from Punta Campanella located on the coast of Sorrento.
It is 6 km long and 3 km wide. Marina Grande is its port. The Greeks reached it in the VIII century B.C., but its
most successful period was that of the Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius who built sumptuous villas here. These
remains represent today's archaeological treasury of the island. During the period of Saracen raids the inhabitants
defended themselves by building the town on the Greek wails between Monte Solaro and the promontory of Tiberius. |
 |
| The island is surrounded by a deep sea due to the fracture that separated it (probably
10,000 years ago) from the peninsula of Sorrento. This is testified by the flora, the calcareous rock and the prehistoric
fossils that populated the continental Monti Lattari. |

There are two towns (Capri and Anacapri) and several hamlets on Capri. Above all,
this is the island of myth, much sought-after by artists and scholars from all around the world who loved it and
dedicated to Capri songs, tales, pictorial images and legends. Towards the end of the XIX century the poet Kopisch
and the fabulist Andersen gave a loving description of Capri's beauties. From that very moment the island began
to attract all different types of tourists: kings, businessmen, politicians, archaeologists and scholars. The Tsar
Nicholas Il, the Emperor Francis Joseph and Queen Victoria of Sweden were all important guests of Palazzo Ceno,
while Gorkij and other Russian exiles such as Lenin were guests of the "Casa Rossa" (red house). In summer
the famous Piazzetta (little square) becomes a "branch" of Hollywood and Cinecittà. |

The town of Anacapri lies 280 metres above sea-level at the foot of the mountains Solaro (589 m), Cappello
(514 m) and Santa Maria (499 m)
on the western and higher part of the island. It is connected to Capri by small buses that cover the windy and
steep distance of approximately 4 km. Along with the small village of Anacapri there are also small hamlets scattered
all around the area: Damecuta, Capodimonte, Starza and La Migliara.
The economy was once based on agriculture and dockyard activities, as the people of Anacapri spent a long period
working for the shipyards of the Kingdom of Naples. The current economy is based on tourism, business and agriculture. |
Food & Wine
To satisfy your appetite as well as your sight and curiosity, you should try the dishes based on fish, the linguine with scorpion-fish sauce, the Capri-style
ravioli and other delicacies, by
sitting comfortably under the pergola
of one of the many restaurants that offer unequalled panoramas - maybe while listening to famous Neapolitan songs.
Excellent wines and the locally-produced deliciously fragrant liqueur Limoncello are perfect dining companions for your exquisite meals. |
