Around 10th October, the Maestro's birthday, when the city and it's surroundings steeped in the autumnal colors and scents of the Verdi homeland, deeply touch our collective imagination, this is the moment when the festival comes to life: the days vibrate with music, opera and listening guides comparing singers from the present and the glorious past, conferences, readings from the masterpieces of literature which inspired the opera libretti, exhibitions, shows, a range of productions catering for every level of musical expertise, theatre, dance and avant-garde visual arts. The Festival is set in the theatres, opera-houses and most picturesque locations in Parma and land of Verdi.

According to Albrecht Durer, who stood in awe of this grand old man, this focal point for all the artists circulating in Venice in the second half of the 15th century, Giovanni Bellini was "the best painter of all". Bellini was already very old at the time, but he still perfectly embodied the glorious tradition of Venetian humanism from its first timid beginnings to the fullness of its splendor. The Scuderie del Quirinale is proud to be able to devote a monographic exhibition to Giovanni Bellini - the first such exhibition since the one held in Venice in 1949 - hosting over 60 paintings that account for some three-fourths of his entire known and certain output of sacred and profane subjects.

For 40 years the Barcolana has been the regatta for everyone. From huge sailing yachts to small boats, from professional yachtsmen and women to the passionate amateur, the regatta is a celebration of the sea and full of competitive spirit. Some of those taking part in the race sail boats which boast the latest marine technology, with ever-larger sails to overcome Trieste’s dead calm and canting keels to fight against the Bora, Trieste’s famous wind. Whatever the weather, the event is always eagerly awaited on the annual date of the second Sunday of October. Every one of the two thousand boat owners and boats that take part in the Barcolana has a different tale to tell – but they are all brought together by Trieste’s yearly race, situated in the gulf where the Mediterranean meets the centre of Europe.
