Giovanni Bellini
Roma - 30th September 2008 - 11th January 2009 www.scuderiequirinale.it
The Scuderie del Quirinale is proud to announce a monographic exhibition on Giovanni Bellini, hosting over 60 paintings that account for some three-fourths of his entire know and certain output of sacred and profane subjects. A calm artist imbued with a deeply religious spirit, Bellini painted tirelessly for the whole of his life, portraying figures deeply immersed in the space around them. A space so intimately "Venetian", with its soft light, with her sober realism of the figures bathed in that light, and with the artist's taste for minute detail including the meticulous botanical detail that allows us to identify every single blade of grass.
Guercino at the Uffizi
Firenze - 17th December 2008 - 22nd February 2009 www.polomuseale.firenze.it
Born in Cento in Emilia, Giovan Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino was without doubt one of the most consummate and fertile masters of Italian drawing in the seventeenth century. His production was distinguished from that of his contemporaries by its inventive vivacity and exceptional technical expertise. The remarkable vigour of his drawings was immediately appreciated by the historians, and the features of “tasteful ease” that have aptly been discerned as marking Guercino’s graphic production invite us to see this facility, which was the artist’s most notable quality, not simply in the sense of a natural gift but rather as an only partly innate talent for graphic expression.
Katharina Grosse
Modena - 17th September 2008 - 6th January 2009 www.emiliaromagnaturismo.it
Interested largely in the “How” side of painting – i.e. the gesture freed from the surrounding area of the canvas – Katharina Grosse carries out uninterrupted pictorial interventions: she works with an air compressor, allowing her in theory to apply an endless stroke, going beyond the use of the canvas as the sole support. Katharina Grosse is constantly on the lookout for new materials, experimenting with the yield and potency of her colours and coming up with images that appear to be perpetually in movement. Inside the Palazzina dei Giardini, a series of already painted canvases will be positioned and then repainted in loco.
